Governor Whitmer Statement on PFAS Provisions in Final FY2020 NDAA

Governor Gretchen Whitmer released the following statement after the US House and Senate passed the FY2020 National Defense Authorization Act.

"I thank Congress, particularly members of the Michigan Congressional delegation, for including important protections against PFAS contamination in the final NDAA," said Whitmer. "Michigan Democrats and Republicans alike were instrumental in the fight to keep our service members safe from exposure to harmful PFAS chemicals.

"However, without provisions to set a drinking water standard or to require responsible parties to clean up PFAS contamination, the NDAA simply doesn't go far enough to protect drinking water and safeguard public health. Here in Michigan, we will keep leading the fight against PFAS contamination, including by setting our own science-based drinking water standard. I call on Congress to continue working to protect communities across the nation from PFAS chemicals. "
