Rep. Cisneros Votes in Favor of War Powers Resolution

Statement

Today, Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) voted in favor of the War Powers Resolution which reclaims Congress' constitutional power to declare war and limits the President's authority to take military action against Iran. Earlier this evening, Rep. Cisneros spoke on the House floor about why the House should pass the resolution and Congress should re-establish itself as an equal branch of government.

"Article one, section eight of the U.S. Constitution explicitly gives Congress the power to declare war. While the President has every right to respond to imminent threats, a decision to undertake sustained military action against Iran must be authorized by Congress first," said Rep. Cisneros. "Sending our brave men and women in uniform into harm's way cannot be taken lightly. As a Navy Veteran, I am constantly thinking of our brave servicemembers and take this constitutional responsibility seriously. That is why I voted for the War Powers Resolution to reclaim Congress' constitutional power."

Rep. Cisneros is a member of the House Armed Services Committee.
