Rep. Sánchez Calls for Trump Administration to End "Remain in Mexico" Policy

U.S. Rep. Linda T. Sánchez (CA-38), Immigration Task Force Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, called for the Trump Administration to end its failed "Remain in Mexico" policy in Matamoros, Mexico today where a humanitarian crisis was created because of the policy.

"What I saw today in this tent city was horrific," said Congresswoman Sánchez. "As a mom, my heart breaks seeing sick children lacking access to proper medical care and children playing near open sewage. Families in the camp were drinking, bathing, and washing their clothes in river water that is known to be contaminated with E. coli. These conditions remind me of refugee camps in a war-torn developing country.

"Let me be clear--the Trump Administration's anti-immigrant policies have not only failed to address the needs of migrants but have actually exacerbated the crisis. When the Administration separated families at the border, the public outcry forced them to change policy. All they have done is move it across the border, hoping that out of sight means out of mind.

"Lawyers do not have proper access to their clients and are unable to witness these dark policies being secretly implemented by the Administration. These are our fellow humans who deserve due process and basic human rights. That is why the American people must not look away from the images we are bringing out of that camp. We need to be vigilant if we want to end the human suffering that is happening there."
