Rep. Hayes Statement on Trump Administration Kicking Thousands of People Off SNAP

Statement

Date: Dec. 5, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Today, United States Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (CT-05) released the following statement condemning the Trump Administration for its callous decision to cut off hundreds of thousands of needy Americans from their SNAP benefits:

"The decision to restrict access to SNAP benefits is the latest blow in a coordinated effort by the Trump Administration against hungry and food-insecure Americans," said Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (CT-05). "20 towns in the 5th District -- Bethlehem, Bridgewater, Goshen, Harwinton, Meriden, Middlebury, Morris, New Britain, New Fairfield, New Milford, Norfolk, North Canaan, Plainville, Plymouth, Southbury, Thomaston, Torrington, Warren, Waterbury, and Wolcott -- all use this waiver and rely on SNAP benefits to put food on the table. The majority of people who receive SNAP benefits work, but are underemployed and there is no racial, political, or geographic group that is exempt from need. I strongly urge Secretary Purdue and the Trump Administration to reverse this disastrous decision immediately."
