Rep. Hayes Votes to Eliminate SALT Cap

Statement

Date: Dec. 19, 2019
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Taxes

Today, United States Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (CT-05) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed legislation eliminating the cap on state and local tax (SALT) deduction for 2020 and 2021. The bill also doubles the cap for 2019 for couples filing jointly.

"As leaders, one of our most important duties is to design a fair and equitable tax system. The tax code should never be used as a means to score political points.

Implemented as part of the GOP tax bill in 2018, the $10,000 SALT cap has directly hurt people in Connecticut. The cap unfairly targeted heavily-populated states. Eliminating the cap will provide much-needed relief to hardworking taxpayers in my state and my district -- and it is the right thing to do.

This vote is a victory for the people of Connecticut. I urge the Senate to take up this critical legislation as soon as possible."
