Brown: After Nearly Two Decades of War the United States Must Fundamentally Reassess Our Role in Afghanistan

Statement

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), Vice Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee and a 30-year combat veteran, released the following statement calling for a reassessment of America's mission in Afghanistan ahead of a meeting with General Austin Scott Miller:

"I've witnessed first-hand the limited progress we've made in Afghanistan despite the extraordinary courage and resolve of our troops and diplomats to bring peace and prosperity to the region. I believed then, as I do now, that after nearly two decades of war the United States must fundamentally reassess our role in Afghanistan.

The Americans - and our allies and partners - who have served in Afghanistan have made immeasurable sacrifices in the pursuit of security and stability. But we dishonor those sacrifices by stubbornly pursuing failed strategies and perpetuating a cycle of misinformation and outright deception on the American people. We must confront the profound cost of war and accept that open-ended conflicts do not serve our interests or those of the Afghan people. Even though many challenges remain, it is time to turn the page."
