Congressman Anthony Brown's Statement on Governor Hogan's Planned Beltway Expansion

Statement

Date: Dec. 5, 2019
Location: Washington D.C.
Issues: Transportation

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), the only Maryland member on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, released the following statement after a meeting with Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn and State Highway Administrator Greg Slater on the planned addition of toll lanes to the Capital Beltway and Interstate 270:

"Governor Hogan is pushing forward with his Beltway expansion project without transparency, community support or a comprehensive vision for what Maryland's transportation network will look like in the 21st century. I have serious concerns that the Hogan Administration is withholding important information and steamrolling through this process with little input from residents and other stakeholders. Additionally, the Governor's shortsighted plan to simply build more lanes dismisses innovative alternatives that invest in public transit or better reduce congestion and move people more efficiently. We can't build for the future with old ideas."
