Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, made the following statement regarding the announcement that two Articles of Impeachment, one for Abuse of Power and one for Obstruction of Congress, would be brought before the House of Representatives for a vote:
"This is a historical and somber moment for members of the U.S. House of Representatives and for all Americans. I take my constitutional oath and responsibilities very seriously, and feel it is imperative President Donald J. Trump be held accountable for his actions. The evidence is clear: the President abused his power by soliciting interference from a foreign government in the 2020 United States Presidential election. He also obstructed justice by taking concrete and verifiable actions to block Constitutionally backed investigations into his activities. The President has endangered the very foundation of our democracy and has put our national security at risk. If Congress does not hold the president accountable, it will send the message that every future president can manipulate a foreign power for their own electoral benefit and get away with it. At this moment our elections are under attack and our commander-in-chief is not only doing nothing to stop it, he is actively encouraging it. This is an urgent matter.
"I will vote in support of both articles of impeachment. This is a vote to protect our country, the American people, and our constitution for generations to come. No person is above the law, not even the President."
