Simpson Praises Senator Craig for RECA Language in Justice Dept. Funding Bill

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Mike Simpson issued the following statement regarding Senator Larry Craig's efforts to include Idaho-related RECA language in the conference report to the FY2006 Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations Bill. The conference report passed the House this afternoon and will soon be considered in the Senate.

"I want to commend Senator Craig for including language in the bill that will require the Department of Justice to issue recommendations on RECA that might lead to compensation for Idahoans. This is a great idea which was only made possible through Senator Craig's determination and hard work. This is a very significant development for Idaho's downwinders. They have a great advocate in Senator Craig."

Senator Craig successfully attached the RECA language to the bill as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. His language requires the Department of Justice to issue suggestions for the Department and Congress to implement the recommendations of the National Academy of Sciences. Doing so may ultimately lead to a revised RECA program that would include Idahoans.
