Rep. Cisneros Statement on Resolution Recognizing the Armenian Genocide

Statement

Today, Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) released the following statement after supporting the bipartisan resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Through the Affirming the United States Record on the Armenian Genocide Resolution, the United States joins 31 countries, including 14 NATO allies, in recognizing the genocide of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire.

"By formally acknowledging the Armenian Genocide we join the Armenian-American community and Armenians around the world in solemnly honoring the memory of the 1.5 million people who were lost," said Rep. Cisneros. "This bipartisan resolution upholds our duty to denounce ethnic violence, as well as our responsibility to ensure such a tragedy never occurs again. As our allies face attacks and persecution in Northern Syria and abroad, it is more important than ever that the United States stands as a beacon of hope and strongly against hatred and intolerance."

Rep. Cisneros is a Navy veteran and serves on the House Armed Services Committee. Rep. Cisneros supported an amendment offered by Rep. Speier to the FY 2020 State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Act that dedicated $40 million for Armenian democracy assistance.
