Gianforte statement on special interest group's smears of Lawrence VanDyke

Issues: Judicial Branch

In response to the American Bar Association's character attacks on Lawrence VanDyke, a former Montana Solicitor General and President Trump's nominee to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Congressman Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.) released the following statement:

"President Trump nominated a well-qualified attorney and a good man in Lawrence VanDyke to serve on the Ninth Circuit. I know Lawrence VanDyke, and I proudly support and endorse his nomination. In contrast to the judicial activism that drives the Ninth Circuit, VanDyke would practice the proper role of the courts -- to interpret laws, not make them from the bench.

"Unfortunately, in a move from the thickest muck of the swamp, a trial lawyers' special interest group pushes its extreme agenda against a well-qualified nominee. Marcia Davenport, a partisan hack who openly opposed VanDyke in a campaign, conducted a sham interview and hid behind a keyboard to smear him with attacks on his character. The ABA and Ms. Davenport should be ashamed of themselves."
