Rosen speaks at NSHE Hispanic and Minority Serving Institutions Symposium

Statement

Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), spoke at a symposium focused on Hispanic and minority serving institutions, hosted by the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) at the College of Southern Nevada. During her remarks, Senator Rosen touched upon the importance of supporting Hispanic and minority students in their pursuit of higher education.

"In Clark County, Latino students make up over 45% of the total enrolled population for K through 12 students, and that population continues to grow each year," said Senator Rosen. "However, when it comes to Latino students obtaining a college degree, that percentage drops significantly. We must empower Latino students to reach their full potential by supporting the Hispanic and Minority Serving Institutions we have here in Nevada."

BACKGROUND: Hispanic-Serving Institutions are defined as degree-granting institutions where total Hispanic enrollment constitutes of no less than 25% of the total enrollment. Nevada is home to four Hispanic-Serving Institutions, including: College of Southern Nevada, Nevada State College, Truckee Meadows Community College, and University of Nevada Las Vegas; and two emerging HSIs: University of Nevada Reno and Western Nevada College.

Last month, Senator Rosen co-sponsored a bipartisan resolution recognizing the work, goals, and achievements of 523 non-profit Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) throughout our nation, including many in Nevada. The resolution designates the week of September 16th through 22nd as National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week.
