Heinrich to visit Luna And Dona Aña County Armories, recognize border community efforts; tour Las Cruces border patrol station

Today, Thursday, October 3, in Deming, and on Friday, October 4, in Las Cruces, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) will address the ongoing harm and fallout of the Trump administration's inhumane immigration policies that have affected thousands of asylum seekers in New Mexico. Senator Heinrich will recognize community members from Luna and Doña Ana Counties for their response to assist migrant families. Senator Heinrich will also tour the Las Cruces Border Patrol Station.

Senator Heinrich secured $30 million in reimbursement funds for localities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in New Mexico and elsewhere that provided much-needed humanitarian relief to asylum seekers. The measure was included in a $4.6 billion border supplemental funding agreement that passed the Senate and was signed into law. The agreement includes emergency funding to address the humanitarian crisis at the border, with significant funding for legal assistance, food, water, and medical services, as well as stronger protections for unaccompanied children. The agreement requires the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to prioritize community-based care, foster care, and small group homes over large institutional facilities.
