U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, released the following statement today after President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Abe signed phase one of the U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement, which will eliminate or lower tariffs for U.S. agricultural products:
"Nebraska welcomes this trade deal between the U.S. and Japan, which is the top export destination for Nebraska beef and a major buyer of our state's many agricultural products. I thank President Trump for negotiating this deal. Congress should build off of this momentum by passing USMCA and providing certainty to our farmers and producers."
The deal reduces tariffs on products including fresh and frozen beef and pork, and provides a country-specific quota for wheat and wheat products. It will also eliminate tariffs on agricultural products including sweet corn and grain sorghum.
