Yesterday, Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, and fifth-ranking House Democrat Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) signed on as a co-sponsor of Representative Antonio Delgado's (NY-19) Medicare-X Choice Act legislation to create a public option health plan available for purchase on the individual and small business exchanges and achieve universal health care.

H.R. 2000 is the House companion to legislation introduced by Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Tim Kaine (D-VA). The bill would combine Medicare physician networks and reimbursement rates with Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage standards to create a new, public health insurance option available to all Americans.

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries said, "House Democrats are laser focused on lowering healthcare costs for everyday Americans. It is a top priority in connection with our For The People agenda, and one that we are committed to delivering. The Medicare-X Choice Act will play an incredibly important role in improving the access and affordability of healthcare delivery in America. I am thankful for the thoughtful and principled leadership of Rep. Antonio Delgado."

"I'm pleased to see Chairman Jeffries sign on as a co-sponsor of the Medicare-X Choice Act and support this critical legislation to achieve universal health coverage," said Rep. Delgado. "Addressing the skyrocketing costs of health care and prescription drugs continue to be one of my top priorities and I am proud to see this legislation earn the support of a member of House leadership. I will continue to fight to bring this bill to the House Floor for a vote to increase access to affordable, quality health care for all."

Rep. Delgado introduced the Medicare-X Choice Act in April along with Representatives John Larson (CT-01) and Brian Higgins (NY-26). The bill currently has the support of 18 co-sponsors, including 9 members of the freshman class.
