Slotkin Talks Healthcare Costs with Lake Orion Physicians As Part of "Costs of Care" Tour

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) visited HealthQuest Physical Therapy in Lake Orion yesterday, as part of her month-long, district-wide "Costs of Care" tour to connect with 8th district residents, patients, advocates, families and healthcare professionals to bring their concerns back to Washington as she continues to fight to bring healthcare costs down.

Slotkin made a stop at HealthQuest Physical Therapy in Lake Orion, where she toured the facility and sat down with partners Phil Krause and Dan Binnick, physical therapist Dan Cady, and Tom Barba from the Michigan Physical Therapy Association, to hear about their experience delivering physical therapy care in the community, the alternative it can provide to reliance on opioids or prescription drugs to treat chronic pain, and discussed some of the challenges their patients face in accessing the care they need.

"Our "Costs of Care' Tour took us to HealthQuest Physical Therapy in Lake Orion, where I got to see some of the innovative therapies they offer first hand," Slotkin said. "We talked about how physical therapy can reduce reliance on opioids as well as out-of-pocket prescription drug costs by offering an alternative to managing pain."

"Hearing about the trouble of getting insurance companies to cover certain therapies adds to the chorus I've been hearing across the district ---- that even with healthcare coverage, the specific care people need is out of reach," Slotkin continued. "Affordable healthcare is our generation's problem to solve, and opportunities like this, to hear directly from those delivering this care in our community, helps me push for solutions in Congress that make care more affordable."

During her "Costs of Care" tour, Slotkin has made stops in Ingham, Oakland and Livingston Counties. Since being sworn in, Slotkin has made lowering prescription drug and healthcare costs a top priority, standing as a staunch defender of protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and leading on and voting to pass legislation to drive down healthcare costs.

To bring greater transparency to prescription drug pricing, Slotkin has introduced the Real-Time Benefits Act, a bipartisan bill created in direct consultation with her healthcare and seniors district advisory boards, that would help lower out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs by giving Medicare patients and doctors real-time updates on the price of prescription drugs, before they leave the doctor's office. The bill passed out of the Ways and Means Committee in June.
