DURBIN STATEMENT REGARDING DISMISSAL OF AMTRAK PRESIDENT

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today made the following statement regarding the dismissal of Amtrak President David Gunn:

Today's dismissal of Amtrak President and CEO David Gunn by the Amtrak Board of Directors is a clear demonstration that the Bush administration is determined to end Amtrak and seriously curtail passenger rail service in our nation.

Under Gunn's leadership, Amtrak increased ridership by over 2 million people since 2001 and revenues by $18 million in the last year alone. Amtrak has successfully expanded and become a viable mode of energy efficient transportation.

David Gunn was no crony; he was a professional. He obviously made the White House uncomfortable.
