Pelosi: House Must Vote Today to Oppose Torture

Washington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the need for the House to go on record strongly opposing use of torture of detainees:

"President Bush declared yesterday in Panama that ‘we do not torture.' In light of the President's declaration, the House must go on record today in support of writing into law the policy the President has now endorsed.

"I call upon Speaker Hastert to appoint House conferees to the defense appropriations bill without further delay so that Congressman John Murtha can offer his motion demonstrating the House's strong opposition to torture of detainees.

"The American people know that torture is inconsistent with our values. We must make certain that our laws reflect those values."
