Baldwin Statement on Indictment of Lewis Libby

"Honesty and integrity are essential leadership qualities and are central in a true democracy. Today's indictments of Vice President Cheney's Chief of Staff, on the heels of recent indictments of House Republican Leader Tom DeLay, are devastating to all of us who cherish our democratic form of governance because these indictments shake the faith of the people that their democracy works for them.

But today's indictments are devastating for another reason. The alleged actions, if proven, were part and parcel of an effort by this administration to deceive the American public into supporting a war and occupation of Iraq - a war which has led to the deaths of more than 2000 servicemen and women and serious injury and disability to tens of thousands more.

No better example exists to demonstrate why honesty and integrity are essential to a properly functioning democracy."
