The Nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the United States Supreme Court

"When he first ran for office George W. Bush promised to be a uniter, not a divider. Tragically, he has turned out to be one of the most divisive presidents in American history and, with the nomination of Judge Alito today, he is continuing in that very destructive direction.

"In replacing a moderate justice like Sandra Day O'Connor, President Bush had the opportunity to nominate an experienced jurist who fell within the mainstream of legal thought in America. In doing that, he could have helped bring our country together. Unfortunately, in nominating Judge Alito, he has bowed to pressure from the extreme right wing of the Republican Party and nominated someone who reflects their positions.

"During the Senate confirmation process, Judge Alito will have the opportunity to present his legal positions and judicial philosophy. He will also be questioned about some of the important legal questions facing our country, including his views on a woman's right to choose. I intend to follow the confirmation process closely.
