Bush Avian Flu Plan Long Overdue
WASHINGTON, DC - Democratic Chief Deputy Whip Diana DeGette (CO-1), a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement regarding President Bush's announcement that he will release the administration's avian flu pandemic response plan tomorrow:
"The release of President's plan on combating pandemic flu is long overdue. Unfortunately, it has already been reported that it will take as long as five years for this plan to be implemented. This is particularly disconcerting given that, because of Administration delays, we have lost two years that could have been used to implement this plan. I am also troubled that the President's plan places the burden of prevention and response squarely on the shoulders of state and local officials without providing them anywhere near the funding they will need to adequately protect the public."
