McCaul Votes To Protect Property Rights

(Washington D.C.)- Today Congressman McCaul joined his House colleagues in passing the Private Property Rights Protection Act of 2005. This bipartisan legislation, which passed by a vote of 376-38, was introduced in response to the narrow 5-4 U.S. Supreme Court decision Kelo v. City of New London, giving local governments broad eminent domain power to seize private property from one party and give it to another.

"This important legislation will defend the vital private property rights of every American," stated Congressman McCaul. He went on to say, "This summer, the Supreme Court's narrow decision in Kelo v. New London called into question over two centuries of legal precedent and the individual property rights essential to our freedom and prosperity. Today, Congress answered those questions by defending the freedoms of private ownership that are essential to our way of life."

"I am committed to the principles of private property and limited government. States or localities that abuse their eminent domain power under the guise of 'economic development' should not be trusted with federal economic development funding," stated Congressman McCaul.
