Rep. McNerney CBD Amendment and Amendment to Combat Gerrymandering Included in House-passed Spending Bill

Statement

Date: June 25, 2019
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Elections

In response to the House passage of H.R. 3055, the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2020 -- which includes two amendments authored by Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09) relating to the regulation of safe CBD levels in products and funding to combat partisan gerrymandering through scientific practices -- the Congressman issued the following statement:

"Consumer safety and confidence is of the utmost importance, and it was the driving factor behind my introduction of the CBD amendment. By directing the Food & Drug Administration to set safe CBD consumption levels, we will be giving consumers peace of mind and outlining standards for producers to ensure a safe and reliable market for these products.

"Additionally, as a scientist and longtime supporter of good-governance reforms, I'm proud to have secured funding in this bill for the National Science Foundation to study and establish best practices for congressional redistricting that will enable an impartial process through the application of scientific and mathematical principles. For too long, districts have been drawn by the very people who benefit from partisan gerrymandering, but by removing bias, we can begin to rebuild the trust of the American people and put our elections back in the hands of the voters."
