Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement after reports surfaced of President Danilo Medina seeking to alter the Constitution of the Dominican Republic in order to run for an unprecedented third term:

"President Danilo Medina's efforts to alter the Constitution of the Dominican Republic in an attempt to run for a third presidential bid should be of grave concern to democracies in the region and worldwide," Rubio said. "Circumventing the established presidential term limits in the Dominican Republic threatens democratic norms and would set a terrible precedent in the Dominican Republic and Caribbean Basin."

Rubio is the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women's Issues.
