MURKOWSKI ISSUES INDEPENDENCE DAY STATEMENT
U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski today urged Alaskans to give special honor to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces during next week's Independence Day observances, giving them special thanks for their efforts during the Iraq War and the continuing war on terrorism. Her complete statement follows:
"July 4th marks a day of great celebration in the United States. On this day all Americans gather together to acknowledge and celebrate independence and freedom. As each year passes the guiding principles of our Constitution -- freedom, tolerance and personal liberty -- show their true worth both at home and abroad.
"Each of our nation's 227 birthdays has been marked by different circumstances. However, the present situation in Iraq and the war on terrorism call for a special moment of recognition.
"The men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces continue to pursue those who aim to threaten the security of our physical and philosophical borders. It is important to recognize the great sacrifices these men and women are making on behalf of not only those of us residing in the United States, but for those around the world that prize democracy, liberty and freedom.
"As we gather with family, friends and neighbors it is important to acknowledge the sacrifices of these courageous men and women. We must also remember the efforts of all those since 1776 who have worked to produce and protect the freedoms that provide us the opportunity to live our daily lives in a land that offers freedom of speech, religion, association and rewards initiative and hard work.
"Fourth of July celebrations display the unity of our nation and local communities in the face of adversity. Celebrating together, despite our racial and religious differences, is an excellent example of why America continues to lead the world in providing families with social freedom and economic opportunity.
"Servicemen and women, such as Alaskan Air Force pilot Eric Das who lost his life in Iraq this April, serve as constant reminders to Alaskans and Americans alike that freedom takes sacrifice.
"Please join me in celebrating our nation's anniversary while taking a moment to remember and appreciate those who work daily to secure our freedom and protect our Constitution," said Senator Murkowski.
