Rep. Beyer issued the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1994, the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act:
"This bipartisan legislation will help Americans retire with greater financial security while fixing huge problems with the GOP tax law. I'm very happy to see the near-unanimity of this bill in the House, and hope we see swift movement on it in the Senate. I also hope my Republican colleagues will take the lesson from this that rushing enormous legislation without hearings can badly hurt Americans; far better that we take the time we need to do our jobs right."
Beyer spoke on the floor during debate on the SECURE Act, which contained a provision to remedy problems with the 2017 GOP tax law. Among these was a fix to eliminate tax hikes on survivor benefits paid to the children of deceased first responders, which mirrored standalone legislation Rep. Beyer introduced earlier this week.
