U.S. House Passes Delgado Backed Bill to Address Climate Change, Reaffirm Commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Climate Action Now Act, legislation supported by Congressman Delgado (NY-19) to fulfill the U.S. commitment to the historic Paris Climate Agreement. This legislation would prohibit the federal government from using taxpayer funds and resources to withdraw from the landmark agreement and require the executive branch to produce a comprehensive plan, within a year, to meet our agreed upon commitments, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the rise of the global temperature.

"Solving the climate change crisis is of paramount importance. The threat is here, and I've seen the impact in my district and all across Upstate New York - from flooding, to crop loss, to the spread of Lyme disease. With the rise of extreme weather events, it is more important than ever to take bold action to address climate change. It's a disgrace that this Administration would have the U.S. be the only country to pull out of this agreement," Delgado said. He continued, "We cannot just turn our back on solving the climate crisis or the commitment we made to the rest of the world to lead on this issue. That's why I was proud to join my colleagues in sending a strong message that this Congress will demand U.S. leadership in treating climate change like the crisis that it is."

The U.S. joined almost 200 countries in agreeing to the Paris Climate Agreement, paving the way for the historic advancement of a climate-friendly future. Each country that joined the agreement is responsible for putting forth a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, in 2017, President Trump announced that the U.S. would be withdrawing from the agreement, which would take effect in November 2020.

Throughout his time in Congress, Representative Delgado has prioritized addressing climate change and protecting natural resources. Recently, he announced his plans to introduce green jobs legislation to ensure a smooth transition to a clean energy economy.
