DURBIN STATEMENT FOLLOWING ANNOUNCEMENT BY SPECIAL COUNSEL PATRICK FITZGERALD

It is a sad day for America when a federal grand jury indicts a high-ranking White House official.

We now know that the White House risked our national security by leaking to the press the identity of a CIA agent in an effort to discredit and silence a critic of the President's invasion of Iraq. The American people know the cost of this war - more than 2,000 dead, more than 15,000 wounded U.S. soldiers, hundreds of billions of dollars already spent and no end in sight.

The special prosecutor is continuing his investigation, and it remains to be seen if other top advisors of the President will be indicted. The President should hold to his promise and any other officials who are indicted should be removed immediately. The White House needs a new team to restore the confidence of the American people in the President's leadership.
