DURBIN STATEMENT ON THE WITHDRAWAL OF HARRIET MIERS

For every political decision there is a good reason and a real reason.

The White House stated that the withdrawal of Harriet Miers now was over the release of documents. The real reason was the extreme right-wing of the Republican Party opposed her nomination from the start.

The withdrawal of the nomination of Harriet Miers was not about documents, it was about Dobson.

Now the President faces a real test of his leadership. Will he serve the narrow political interests of the most radical faction of the Republican party or will he serve the national interest in filling this critical vacancy?

The people of this nation and the Supreme Court need a nominee who reflects mainstream values, not a narrow political agenda on the right or the left. The issue is not bragging rights in a political battle, but the constitutional rights of Americans before the highest court in the land.
