Congressman Kelly Armstrong's Statement on the Violence Against Women Act

Congressman Kelly Armstrong criticized House Democrats today for politicizing the typically bipartisan vote to reauthorize the Violence Against Woman Act. Armstrong released the following statement on the vote:

"In their rush to add politically motivated provisions to the Violence Against Women Act, the Democrats have created significant constitutional problems that I cannot ignore, threatening Second Amendment rights, double jeopardy protections, and due process protections.

"I support the Violence Against Women Act. I voted to reauthorize the 2013 law in February and again today. I am disappointed and frustrated that Democrats have politicized protecting women from violence, but I cannot compromise on core constitutional protections."

Armstrong is in his first term as the lone representative for the state of North Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Background:

In February and again today, House Republicans moved to renew the Violence Against Women Act, but were voted down by House Democrats.

Congressman Armstrong serves on the Judiciary Committee, the primary committee of jurisdiction for the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization.
