Presents Facility with Federal Funds to Construct Growing Campus

Baltimore, MD - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) yesterday visited the Kennedy Krieger Institute, an internationally recognized state of the art resource center for children with developmental disabilities.
Hoyer presented the Institute with $750,000 in FY 2005 federal funds to assist Kennedy Krieger with ongoing expansion and construction of their healthcare facilities. As the only Maryland Member of the House Appropriations Committee, and a senior Member of the Subcommittee that funds the Department of Health and Human Services, Hoyer has helped to secure over $1.5 million for Kennedy Krieger over the last three fiscal years, and almost $2 million ($1.94 million to be exact) since FY 2001.
"Kennedy Krieger is an innovative trendsetter in the treatment of children with developmental disabilities," Hoyer said. "Families from around the world turn to the Institute to help their kids live healthy, productive lives."
Kennedy Krieger's clinical programs offer an interdisciplinary approach in treatment tailored to the individual needs of each child. Services include over 40 outpatient clinics; neurobehavioral, rehabilitation, and pediatric feeding disorders inpatient units; plus several home and community programs providing services to assist families.

Hoyer, Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD), and Congressman Ben Cardin (D-MD) were briefed by Dr. John W. McDonald, a leading spinal cord injury specialist, whose former patients include the late Christopher Reeve. Following the briefing, they visited with patients in the Therapeutic Recreation Center.
Hoyer was the lead House of Representatives sponsor of the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), landmark legislation that extended civil rights to an estimated 43 million disabled Americans.
