U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today issued the following statement following National Security Advisor John Bolton speech in Miami's historic Biltmore Hotel announcing additional sanctions against the regimes in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua:
"Today's actions by the Trump administration against the 'Troika of Tyranny' are significant and reaffirm our nation's commitment to democracy and human rights in Latin America. The United States is sending a clear message that there is no room for despots in our hemisphere. I applaud the administration's bold actions during the Brigade 2506 event and look forward to working with them to advance freedom and prosperity in the Western Hemisphere."
Rubio is the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women's Issues.
Today's actions by the Trump administration would sanction Laureano Ortega, son of President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo. On August 24, 2018, Rubio and colleagues urged President Trump to hold Laureano Ortega accountable under Global Magnitsky Act.
Earlier today, Rubio commended the Trump administration's move to hold Cuba accountable.
