Chairman Thompson Statement on DHS Domestic Terrorism Intelligence Work

Statement

Date: April 2, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on news reports on the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) domestic terrorism intelligence analysts:

"News reports like these highlight that we really don't know if the Federal government -- and the Department of Homeland Security -- have the resources or the desire to address the rise of domestic terrorism in the United States. Clearly, we are not doing enough and must be doing much more. We must know if these individuals were reassigned within DHS. I will be holding a hearing on domestic terrorism on May 8 with representatives from the Department of Justice, the FBI, and DHS on domestic terrorist threats to the U.S. homeland."

Before the March white supremacist-inspired domestic terrorism attacks on two New Zealand mosques, Chairman Thompson had written to the FBI and the DOJ demanding a briefing on their efforts to combat domestic terrorism after the Administration stonewalled Congress on this issue.
