Congressman Joe Morelle released the following statement in response to President Trump's decision to declare a national emergency to fund a wall along the nation's Southern border.

"The president's declaration of a fraudulent national emergency is a gross abuse of power that violates our nation's constitution and subverts the will of the American people and his coequal partners in government. This decision establishes a dangerous precedent that robs billions from existing national security imperatives and upends the fundamental balance of power our nation was built upon.

"Rather than a manufacturing a crisis, the President would be better served addressing the very real crises facing everyday Americans - the inability of so many in our country to access quality, affordable healthcare; the effects of climate change that are threatening the security of our planet; the thousands that die every year in our nation from gun violence.

"Over the coming days I will be working with my colleagues in Congress to ensure we mount a full defense of our constitutional authorities and safeguard the American people from the President's reckless impulses."
