Peters Statement on President Trump's Budget Proposal to Cut Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Funding By 90%

Statement

Date: March 11, 2019
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Environment

"The Great Lakes provide drinking water for over 40 million people, are an economic engine for Michigan and are one of our nation's most precious resources. I've seen firsthand across Michigan how funding from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has helped protect our Great Lakes for future generations from threats including invasive species, pollution and climate change. Simply put, the Great Lakes are part of our DNA as Michiganders.

"The Administration's proposal to nearly eliminate funding for the GLRI would severely hurt our ability to clean, preserve and restore our waterways. Just as I did before, I will work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure Congress fully funds the GLRI and that these proposed reductions never see the light of day."
