Brownley Statement on Joint Resolution to Terminate President Trump's Emergency Declaration

Statement

Date: Feb. 26, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA) released the following statement today after the vote on the Joint Resolution to terminate President Trump's emergency declaration:

"This emergency declaration is a desperate power grab engineered by the President after he failed to receive the Congressional approval the Constitution requires. Our democracy relies on a balance between the legislative and executive branches, where Congress has the power of the purse. The President can't simply trample on the Constitution because he wants to pursue a divisive campaign promise the American people resoundingly rejected in last year's election. The House of Representatives just voted to uphold the will of the American people, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to do the same."
