Gov. Rounds to Proclaim November as Hire Veterans First' Month
Gov. Mike Rounds will hold a proclamation signing ceremony in his office on November 1 at 9:30 a.m. (CDT) to proclaim November as Hire Veterans First' month in South Dakota. HireVetsFirst is a national promotion in which the Department of Labor encourages businesses and employers to hire the veteran when they have an available job opening.
"Thousands of men and women have served our state with honor and distinction," said Gov. Rounds. "Now, as veterans, they face the challenge of finding work. We are committed to helping them make this transition."
Along with Gov. Rounds, U.S. Dept. of Labor/VETS Regional Administrator Lester Williams, U.S. Department of Labor/VETS Director Earl Schultz, Major General Michael Gorman of the S.D. Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, S.D. Division of Veterans Affairs Director Dennis Foell, S.D. Secretary of Labor Pam Roberts, S.D. Deputy Secretary of Labor Lloyd Schipper and the State Coordinator of Veterans' Services Todd Kolden will be present.
The South Dakota Department of Labor's Career Centers across the state offer veterans assistance in entering the workforce. The Department of Labor also assists in the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) workshop, which teaches veterans job seeking skills while in the military before separation or retirement. The program operates at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Nearly 400 service members received training on subjects ranging from resume writing to interviewing skills in 2004.
"While employment programs are a vital part of an overall effort, they alone won't put our veterans back to work," said Roberts. "As the military faces new challenges, we need to encourage businesses to give veterans a chance in the business world after service to their country is complete."
