Congressman Kelly Armstrong's Statement on the State of the Union Address

Congressman Kelly Armstrong released the following statement regarding President Donald Trump's State of the Union address:

"In his State of the Union address, President Trump chose to honor people who represent the absolute best of America. Whether it was WWII soldiers' stories of heroism and courage, a nonviolent drug offender's story of redemption, a 10 year old cancer survivor's story of bravery and charity, an ICE agent's story of dedicated public service, or a legal immigrant's story of class and grace as she fulfills her role as First Lady, President Trump reminded us that it is our people who make this the greatest country in history. In a time of deep division, our Commander in Chief laid out a vision of hope for the future. Rather than shying away from some of our deepest philosophical differences, he confronted them with honesty and conviction while recognizing that there are many issues where we have a path forward in compromise and collaboration. The American people expect government to work for them and our president delivered a message of economic growth and economic prosperity."

Armstrong's guest for the State of the Union address was Debbie Bjerk of Grand Forks. Debbie and her husband Keith lost their son, Christian, to a synthetic drug overdose in 2012. Debbie successfully advocated for a Good Samaritan Law in North Dakota, which exempts individuals from certain drug possession charges if they act in good faith to save an individual who is overdosing, such as calling 911. The law was enacted in 2017. Debbie remains active in fighting the drug epidemic in North Dakota and the nation.
