Congressman Biggs Reintroduces the Ending Common Core and Expanding School Choice Act

Statement

Congressman Andy Biggs reintroduced H.R. 69, the Ending Common Core and Expanding School Choice Act. This legislation fulfilled a promise Congressman Biggs made to his constituents, ensuring that states and local jurisdictions -- and not the federal government -- determine how best to spend educational dollars. Congressman Biggs released the following statement:

"It is regrettable that I have to introduce this bill again in the 116th Congress because of the failure of the 115th Congress to pass this important piece of legislation. For several decades, the federal government's role in dictating educational standards and dangling financial incentives has far exceeded its constitutional responsibilities. The federal government operates with a one-size-fits-all mentality, which harms the opportunities for students to grow in educational environments that best suit them. Schools and school districts are tethered to the federal government more than they are to the parents and students under their charge; Common Core state standards are one of the most recent examples of this coercion from the federal government. This concerning trend must be reversed immediately. As we celebrated National School Choice Week last week, I pledge to continue to fight for these bills that return educational control to local jurisdictions, working in concert with their parents and students."
