Rep. Chip Roy released the following statement regarding his vote against a bill that seeks to diminish the President's ability to renegotiate the terms of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO):

"NATO has been a critical ally in defending American interests for many years. It should remain a critical ally in the future. It deserves our shared support, as it has for the past 70 years. Earlier this month, my colleagues in the House of Representatives passed legislation that sought to diminish the authority of the President of the United States to negotiate in our national interests. Congress shouldn't, in a fit of political pushback, restrict any commander-in-chief from negotiation with international organizations.

Reasonable people can have a robust discussion about the appropriate levels of funding for our shared defense should be.

It is my belief that the President -- regardless of party -- should be able to do their job and negotiate for the betterment of the United States and all NATO members."
