U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai"i) released the following statement in response to President Trump's address on the government shutdown.

"We need to open the government first. We can negotiate a proposal on border security and immigration later, but risking the health and safety of Americans, hurting the economy, and delivering pain to families can never be the start of a fruitful negotiation."
