2000th American Casualty is Somber Reminder of Our Struggles in Iraq

U.S. Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO) released the following statement in the wake of the death of 2,000th American soldier in Iraq since the 2003 invasion:

"My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the latest American to lose his life in Iraq. The death of an American soldier is both a private tragedy and a national loss that mere numbers cannot quantify.

While we should all be proud of our men and women in uniform and appreciate the hardships they have had to endure, it is also appropriate that we demand accountability. The mission of our soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen in Iraq has been made much more difficult because of poor leadership and planning from civilians at the Pentagon and the White House. After more than two years, 2,000 deaths and tens of thousands of wounded, the President has an obligation to define tangible goals and provide the American public with a real plan on how to make Iraq more secure."
