Fischer Statement on Decision to Exit INF Treaty

Statement

Date: Feb. 1, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the chairman of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, released the following statement today after President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. will suspend its obligations and begin the process to withdraw

from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty:

"The INF Treaty has been a one-sided agreement for far too long, and I support the Trump administration's decision to withdraw from it. Let's be clear: the blame for the collapse of the INF Treaty lies with Russia, which has tested, built, and deployed classes of banned nuclear weapons since at least 2013.

"For years, the U.S. has tried to bring Russia back into compliance; all the while, they have continued to produce these illegal weapons. It is evident that Russia has no intention of returning to the Treaty, and I commend the Trump administration for recognizing this reality."

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Russia deployed a new battalion of the illegal weapons, violating the INF Treaty.
