U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the chairman of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, released the following statement today after the Trump Administration released the Missile Defense Review:
"Now that the Missile Defense Review has been released, I plan to explore the administration's strategy in greater depth. As the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, I will schedule a hearing on missile defense policy and programs for later this year.
"The administration has already taken a number of steps to bolster U.S. missile defenses. Over the past two years, with the support of Congress, our government has significantly increased funding for the Missile Defense Agency. It has expanded the Ground-based Midcourse Defense System, which is the only system capable of defending the homeland from an ICBM attack. Additionally, we have increased research and development in next-generation missile defense technologies like directed energy and space-based sensors.
"Missile threats are clearly growing, and America's missile defenses play a key role in deterring and defeating attacks on the U.S. and our forces stationed around the world."
