Senator Murray' Statement on Supreme Court Decision Allowing Enforcement of President Trump's Transgender Military Ban

"One day after the nation came together to reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his work to eradicate discrimination, today's unfortunate Supreme Court decision on President Trump's misguided ban on transgender Americans serving in the military is more concerning proof that we are still a long way from living Dr. King's dream. Instead of listening to the experienced guidance of military leaders and overwhelming concerns of LGBTQ people and allies across the country, today's court order sends a clear message to the transgender community, including some of our servicemembers on the front lines defending our nation, that they are not valuable and are not welcome in our communities or institutions.

"I've said before that anyone who is qualified should have the opportunity to serve our country, and anyone who wears our uniform to defend our freedoms deserves our country's support and respect. I am deeply disappointed in today's decision, and urge Acting Secretary Shanahan and the Department of Defense not to move forward with this discriminatory ban that would create further uncertainty for our troops and degrade our national security. Most importantly, I will continue working with my colleagues in the Senate to ensure that our transgender neighbors know that they are respected and have a place in our military, in our communities, and in our country."
