President Trump's Impulsive Withdrawal Imperils Our National Security

Statement

Date: Dec. 19, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), a combat veteran and member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement regarding reports that President Trump is considering withdrawing all US troops from Syria and declared "We have defeated ISIS in Syria":

"Unilaterally withdrawing US forces before we have fully defeated ISIS is a mistake. Abandoning our local partners and the Syrian people and leaving them alone to confront Bashar Al-Assad, Russia and Iran is a betrayal and a mistake. By prematurely declaring "mission accomplished' President Trump imperils our national security. We have not won the fight against ISIS. And we have not achieved peace in Syria.

"For the last two years, the Trump Administration has been unable to layout a comprehensive and coherent strategy in Syria and has refused to come before Congress for the authority to engage in the sustained use of military force. Congress and the American people deserve answers. What have we actually achieved in Syria, and what role and presence will we play in the future? Why is President Trump rushing for the exits and handing victory to Russia?"
