Pelosi Honors the Life of Susie Skelton at Tree Planting Ceremony

Washington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke today at a tree planting ceremony on the Capitol grounds in honor of the late Susie Skelton, wife of Congressman Ike Skelton (D-MO). Susie Skelton passed away on August, 23rd. Below are Pelosi's remarks:

"It's perfectly appropriate that Susie should be part of the Olmsted Plan. That this tree which represents remembrance and renewal, is so beautifully placed on this prime piece of real estate in the nation's capital, with this magnificent view of the United States Capitol building, which meant a great deal to her.

"Father Coughlin, thank you for your beautiful remarks. Vickie Tiahrt, the Chair of the Congressional Spouses Association, thank you for being here as well. And I know we can't wait to be inspired again, following Father Coughlin, by our colleague Emanuel Cleaver.

"Ike, thank you for giving us the privilege to share in your fond memories of Susie. She left us quite suddenly during a break in session, and I called Ike and said, ‘Ike, many people would love to be with you who cannot, but we would like to be able to pay our respects to you, your family, and Susie when we return.' I know it means a great deal to Ike that so many of you are here today.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Ike and his family. Ike and Susie were together for 44 years. Forty-four years is a long time to spend with someone, and is a testament to your deep bond.

"Wherever Ike went in the world - on CODELs to remote, foreign places that Susie couldn't go on, he always sent a postcard home to her everyday. They were always constantly linked.

"Today we honor that relationship of love and mutual respect with a tree that will remain a testament to that love and to Susie long after we are all gone.

"Susie and Ike had a tremendous partnership, together raising three outstanding sons: Ike, Jim, and Page. Ike and Jim are now serving our country in the Army and Navy. And Page - we're enjoying Page's barbecue sauce because proud Papa is making sure we all have some.

"Susie came from a political family, and met Ike at a political event. She took naturally to being a politician's wife; often traveling with him throughout his Missouri district and also in her role here leading organizations for Congressional spouses.

"Susie spent much time in Washington, but she was most at home in Missouri. I know Missouri takes special pride in Susie.

"Susie also had education as one of her interests. She served on the board of her alma mater, the University of Missouri, encouraging students to be involved in non-academic activities - like theater, and worked to increase the diversity of the school.

"She partnered with Ike to stand up for our men and women in uniform. That was important to her. I remember we took a trip from Washington to Whiteman Air Force Base and bonded all the way. She told me about their partnership on behalf of the well-being of men and women in uniform, and how proud they were of their sons.

"Her influence was felt by many people. Today we plant this Norwegian maple tree in honor of the enduring memory and example of Susie Skelton, and her husband Ike, who loved her so much.

"This is about remembrance and renewal. And her greatest contribution is her magnificent family. As this tree grows, so will her contribution to the future. Thank you all for being here."
