Quigley Elected Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government (FSGG)

Statement

Date: Jan. 16, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) was elected to serve as Chairman of the Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) Subcommittee on the powerful Appropriations Committee. The FSGG Appropriations Subcommittee, of which he previously served as Ranking Member in the 115th Congress, is responsible for providing oversight and approval over annual spending levels for a diverse number of agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Small Business Administration, the Judiciary, and the Federal Communications Commission.

"I am honored to be named the next Chairman of the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Subcommittee, where I will continue my efforts to protect American consumers, promote small business growth, secure our financial system, and strengthen our commitment to transparency and accountability at every level of government," said Rep. Quigley. "From safeguarding our election infrastructure against foreign attack to ensuring adequate funding for the IRS, I will fight to ensure that key agencies have the resources and tools they need to effectively and efficiently serve the American people."

During his six years on the Appropriations Committee, Rep. Quigley has consistently opposed efforts to weaken the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, restrict the SEC from enforcing new investor protections, and gut the IRS's ability to combat tax fraud. Most recently, Rep. Quigley successfully fought for the inclusion of $380 million in Election Assistance Commission grants through the FSGG portion of the Fiscal Year 2018 Omnibus bill to help states and localities better defend our elections against foreign adversaries. In addition, he secured language from his bipartisan SEC Small Business Advocate Act in the House Fiscal Year 2017 FSGG Appropriations bill. His bill provides small businesses and small business investors an important, independent voice at the SEC. Ultimately, the SEC Small Business Advocate Act passed through Congress as a standalone bill, and was signed into law in December 2016.

"It is my honor to serve with our talented Subcommittee Chairs, our full Committee Vice Chair, and so many distinguished Committee Members. Our Subcommittee Chairs are all deeply experienced and will have a pivotal role as the Appropriations Committee works to invest in America's future," said Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey (NY-17). "House Democrats are committed to working for the people, and together our Appropriations Majority will lead the way to invest in working families, rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, and conduct robust oversight of the Trump administration."

Earlier this month, Rep. Quigley introduced the FSGG appropriations bill to re-open key agencies under the Subcommittee's jurisdiction, including the Department of Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service, and alleviate some of the worst impacts felt by American families, businesses, and communities due to the Trump Shutdown. This bill passed the House by a vote of 240-188.
