Issue Position

I am voting no on this initiative for several reasons: 1) Gas taxes are already too high, and the price of gasoline is too high as well. I do not want to pay ten cents more for every gallon I buy, and I'm sure teachers don't want to either. 2) It is not specific enough. The money can be spent on anything, from K-12 schools to universities. If the money were to be spent exclusively on teachers' salaries, it might have been something to think about. 3) I do not like the deceptive way the proponents of this initiative are advertising it with no specifics at all -- just "do it for the children." That is way too emotional and vague as an explanation for a tax increase. If it passes, this initiative will cause a 33% increase in state gas taxes, but the money can be spent anywhere, meaning that it is not earmarked for teacher salaries or classrooms.
