Van Hollen Statement on Earthquake in South Asia

Washington, D.C. - United States Representative Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) released the following statement on the deadly earthquake in South Asia:

"My thoughts and prayers are with those whose lives were devastated by the earthquake in South Asia.

"This tragedy and the recent disasters of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita remind us of the fragility of life - and that a tragedy anywhere can unite and touch us all. As someone who was born in Pakistan and grew up in India, I have been especially touched by the dignity and strength of survivors who lost so much and are now focused on helping others in their community.

"Just as the rest of the world helped us in our time of need, we stand ready to work quickly and provide assistance to help alleviate the unfathomable suffering and begin the long and arduous road to recovery. I am pleased that the Bush Administration is sending $50 million in aid, helicopters, ground equipment and medical support, and has pledged to provide more assistance in the coming months.

"As Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan face years of rebuilding, I hope that out of this horrific tragedy comes an opportunity for peace and unity."
